Water Basin - Chozubachi or Tsukubai
The chozubachi and tsukubai have had a time honored place in japanese gardens and japanese tea gardens for centuries. Granite stone water basins or chozubachi originated in ancient japanese shrines and temples for worshipers to wash their hands and mouth as a symbol of purification. The water basin originated as a chozubachi, which were usually 16" or taller in height. Japanese tea masters later redesigned the bowls for japanese tea gardens to the height of 12" or shorter to create the tsukubai. The tsukubai or crouching bowl was designed to humble guest and create the right state of mind in the japanese tea garden before entering the tea house.

bspout1.JPG (44550 bytes)Bamboo Spout
Bamboo fountains or "kakei" have been used in Japanese gardens for centuries. Place our bamboo spout at the edge of a pond, basin or water garden to create an instant beautiful natural fountain. Handcrafted of natural bamboo with a traditional japanese horizontal t-bar style spout and an inner liner of tubing for easy pump hookup. Approximate two feet of tubing extends out of the bamboo for easy pump hookup.

Our bamboo spout measures 28" tall with an 18" long spout. The spout height and spout length can also easily be shortened to create your own personal look. Simply insert our stake into the ground, place our bamboo spout over it and instantly have a beautiful and traditional japanese fountain! deerzen.JPG (36163 bytes)Shishi-Odoshi - Deer Chaser
The shishi-odoshi or deer chaser or scarer was originally developed by japanese farmers to scare off deer and boar from crops.  It was later used in gardens as their movement provided an element of change. As the water flows from the bamboo spout, the knocking portion fills and spills the water creating a rhythmic knocking sound as it hits a rock. Placed at the edge of a pond, water garden, carved granite basin or set up "dry style", our deer chaser will create an eye catching fountain and provide a serene rhythmic sound. Our deer chasers are finely hand crafted of natural 1 1/2" - 2" diameter bamboo. The 32" tall spout has a traditional 3" diameter bamboo crossbar for an authentic traditional japanese appeal. Includes 8' of high quality non-kinking tubing. (Does not include granite basin shown. For our beautiful carved granite basins please see "lantern & fences" link.) Oversized cannot ship air.  Variable rate pump recommended (our turbo pump below works great with our deer chasers).
