#1. Bamboo & Curves
The picture on the left shows how we take extra care in constructing our wing
fences. Japanese wing fences are well known for their exquisite curves that add
character and elegance to a japanese garden. However, by bending the bamboo this
also creates pressure on the bamboo and makes them highly prone to cracking. For all
our wing fences, we actually split the bamboo into small strips and bind them back
together. This allows for the fence to be natural, yet highly durable.
#2. Slat or Canes?
For extra durability we use bamboo slats on most all our gates and fences. Although
this takes much more time and work, it increases the durability and life of the fence or
gate substantially. Each bamboo cane is actually split and then tied to create the lattice
pattern that is popular in japanese fences.
#3. Symmetry
We place bamboo slats on the front and the back of all gates and fences. This allows
for them to look the same on either side - just like full bamboo canes, but much more
durable.
#4. Copper Twined, Vine Bound and Polyurethane
For extra durability, we bind the bamboo strips with copper wire. Japanese bamboo fences
are also very well known for the use of black twine for visual depth and appeal, however
twine can quickly deteriorate depending on the climate. We bind all our gates and fences
with a natural sturdy durable vine. Lastly we apply a coat of polyurethane to the
bamboo to repel water and help retain the color. We also suggest to apply a coat of
polyurethane yearly or depending on your climate.
Caring for Bamboo
Bamboo is much like wood, it is very durable, hard and has great strength. Bamboo should
be treated just as you would any of your outdoor wood products. We suggest to apply a coat
of polyurethane to all bamboo fences or bamboo items yearly or as needed depending on your
climate to repel water and help retain the color. If you live in a humid area, use a mold
resistant polyurethane.
